A crash on Interstate 680 in Walnut Creek, Contra Costa County, has left one family without their loved one. According to the California Highway Patrol, a driver in a Dodge Charger headed southbound into oncoming northbound traffic on May 1st, colliding with six vehicles.

Shanell Shari Smith, a 42-year-old mother from Antioch and a passenger in one of the vehicles, was killed in the crash. Several others were hurt, some sustaining serious injuries.

Authorities report that the wrong-way driver, Yehimi Medina Torres, 27,  has been charged with murder and driving under the influence. Prosecutors also state that the driver has a prior DUI conviction in nearby Alameda County and had previously been warned about the dangers of impaired driving.

Crashes like this are a reminder of how deeply impaired driving can affect people. For those involved, the impact often extends beyond physical injuries, including financial strain and uncertainty about what comes next.

When someone’s reckless conduct behind the wheel causes this kind of harm, the law is there to ensure they are held responsible. It allows those affected to seek compensation for medical bills, pain and suffering, lost wages, or to pursue a wrongful death claim when a life is taken.
