Deadly Big-Rig Crash On The Bay Bridge

Updated: Apr 21, 2023

On the evening of March 15, 2023, two people tragically lost their lives in a crash in the westbound direction of the Bay Bridge. The accident involved a car and a big-rig, which occurred just east of Treasure Island around 11:21 pm. This, however, was not the first incident of the night. Moments before the fatal collision, there had been another incident involving three vehicles, which resulted in minor injuries.

Police activity followed the incidents through the night, leading to the closure of all lanes and creating significant traffic backups on the bridge and into the East Bay throughout the morning.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) confirmed that one person was taken into custody.

The collision on Bay Bridge caused significant delays for AC Transit riders, prompting the service to advise commuters to take BART into San Francisco to avoid the backup.

The incident is concerning and serves as a reminder of the importance of safety and vigilance both for operators of large vehicles and smaller cars.

The investigations into the causes and circumstances surrounding the crash are ongoing.
